Face to Face vs. Online

I think I want to do my reserach on the benefits of face to face vs. online. I am still not sure if this is too broad of a topic. I need to start on more research so I can decide if it is too broad. I find this interesting because I realize I find totally different strengths in online vs. face to face. I like both of them for different reasons. However, I wonder the lasting benefits of each. I have a feeling face to face has some overall longer lasting effects. We will see!

Bibliographic Essay

I am planning on doing my bibliographic essay on ESL tutoring. I don't quite know the content or approach I will be taking with this subject. I figure, after I have read the journals that I have located thus far, I will have a better idea of what I am going to write about in particular.

Podcast

I really like the idea of doing podcasts. I don't think we have enough experience to really give any pros or cons yet. Jennifer and I have had to scrap our original idea and start over which isn't terribly frustrating but it is a bit concerning since our next assigned podcast is next week and we haven't completed the first one yet. I think that until we have equipment set up in the writing center to do the podcasts, this idea might end up being a bit of a hassle since so many people are going to need to coordinate their schedules to get the podcasts done. I can't wait to see the end result, I just don't think that we will be able to do all the podcasts we hoped to do this semester without the proper equipment available in the writing center.

My One Minute of Fame

I was excited when it was first announced to the class that we were going to do podcasts. I've never done one before, but I've seen my husband and brother-in-law do a few. So I thought it would be interesting do be a part of one. To be honest, I've never really listened to any podcasts myself, though I can see myself getting addicted to them if I did start. I've been excited to work with my group members on our podcast, and I believe we have come up with some good things! We've also decided that we're going to make our podcast with some video. Talk about being cool and technological! I think it's a great idea, especially since we're talking about basic essay format. Our struggle at one point was how to explain our topic via just our voices, so I'm glad we're adding the video. I think it's a step in the right direction. But now I have to make sure that I'm looking decent on the day we record. :) I suppose it's just a small sacrifice. In fact, I suppose that the idea of producing podcasts in general is a great way to "keep up with the times." I hope that by doing so, we'll be able to interest and assist students to know who we are and extend that open hand. I think it's just another great way to get us "on the map" so students know we're here.

Podcastaway

Well, I had a good time writing the script. We haven't had the chance to get into the studio to record yet, so I am not quite sure what that will entail. I think that the difference here is the style of writing. It is more conversational, and less technical. It needs to land well on the ears, and be read well, which is another learned skill. I feel that learning to read is just important as learning to write. It is the accurate transfer of what has come from the mind to the page and then the page to the ear. It takes a great deal of quick analysis and comprehension to effectively use inflection and pace to convey the true meaning of what is being read, which will be important as we move forward with these recordings.
