Wish I'd known
Wish I'd known there was a new blog post.
Really the biggest thing that I'd wished I'd known this summer before I started tutoring was that tutoring is really just an extended conversation.
I also wish I'd know that I'd be done super early in the semester and have to spend finals week entertaining myself in the Davis Campus Tutoring Center bored out of my mind.
I also wish that I had known more about what the developmental English students were doing earlier in the year so that I could have been better prepared to assist them. Finally just this week I have started reading the Mercury Reader and looking over The Reader's Handbook & Reviewing Basic Grammar. I also wish that I had gone further with my McCarthy essay and not gotten swine flu.
All in all, this class has vastly improved my tutoring and how I approach my sessions. I now look at myself not as a glorified proof-reader, which I did my first semester, but a coach that helps direct people through the writing process.
I also look at myself more in the light of someone who isn't there to alter tutee's writing to fit my style, but to allow them to develop their own style within the realms of good grammar and punctuation.
I realize that this sounds like the hippy clap-trap that Dr. Rogers despises, but I really believe it's true. I have also learned a good many things about how I will teach when I eventually, fingers crossed, get there.
In addition, because of this class, I watched Dr. Horrible and laughed very hard. This also increased my crush on Nathan Fillion.
I still hated coming to class three times a week after I was so used to night classes. That I will not miss. I will miss the interesting discussions and hearing other's struggles when it comes to the tutoring process.
All in all this class was great. Even though I hated being there three times a week, I did learn a lot about how to make tutoring sessions as valuable as possible for both the tutee and for myself. This class helped keep me sane during the last week of the semester when my average day was 15 hours long and helped me see the value in helping others appreciate reading and writing as much as I do.
This class and tutoring in general has also helped me realize that I am on the right path in terms of being a teacher and that my goal of getting a PhD is not in vain. I am encouraged that I can teach composition and enjoy it. I also like being able to be a sort of expert on MLA citations. It's nice.
However, after everything, the cruise that I am going on next week will be awesome. I cannot wait to be drinking rum drinks in 80 degree weather next to a swimming pool. This will make my holiday.
On that note...I’m out
